The Ultimate List of Cozy, Screen-Free Hobbies for Bookish People

Now, let me begin by saying that as book lovers, obviously our favorite hobby is going to be reading. But as you may have noticed, I've been personally taking a bit of an unintended reading hiatus over the last month. Between a hectic schedule and a few short trips, life has been moving quick! During this busy season, I've found my brain isn't always on board to just sit around and read all day. I know, I know... I'm a book blogger! But even the most dedicated bookworms need a little bit of a break sometimes.

Instead of forcing myself to read, I decided to use some of this time to reconnect with some hobbies I used to love, as well as pick up a few new ones I've been seeing everywhere lately. I'm still trying to focus on my reading goal for the year to scroll less and read more, which is something I am very much struggling with at the moment. It's just way too easy to accidentally swap a book for a mindless phone scroll when your brain is tired.

To combat the screen time, I've been leaning more into cozy hobbies as a way to wind down after a long shift or even a heavy reading session. The best part? You don't have to leave your love for stories behind, as many of these cozy activities are actually perfect for the bookish community, with a few even being directly inspired by books.
If you are looking for some cozy, screen-free inspiration for your own quiet moments, here are a few perfect ways to unwind.

Book Journaling & Scrapbooking
If you've been a reader for a while, you probably know I have a bit of an obsession with book journaling. This is one of my favorite ways to transform my reading experience into a tangible, creative keepsake, and allows me to process my thoughts and feelings about a book long after I've turned the final page. The best part about this hobby is that there's no "right" or "wrong" way to do it, instead you get to make it entirely your own.
  • Book Journaling: This is where you can dig deep into your thoughts. Whether you prefer more of a minimalist approach with monthly stats, or a deep dive review on a hyped up fantasy romance, your book journal is a safe space for you to get all those bookish feelings down on paper.
  • Scrapbooking: This is where you can add a few more creative elements, including photos. I personally love to incorporate photos I've taken while reading, such as when I'm at the park or even lounging by the lake. I'll snap a couple quick photos of my current read and use them to create super cute, aesthetic scrapbooking spreads. Adding these personal touches to your journal captures your life as a reader, instead of just a list of books you've finished.
If you are interested in starting your own book journal but aren't exactly sure where to start, I have a full detailed guide on creating your very own Reading Journal here.

Painting a Bookish Bikini Crate
If you are anything like me, then your love for books follows you everywhere, and can even come in handy when it comes to organizing your bikinis this summer! One of my favorite summer hobbies I tried this summer was painting my own bookish bikini crate.
I have been seeing these trending all over my Youtube feed lately, and it's easy to see why this has become such a popular summer craft. While this is a fun way to show off your love for reading, it's also an incredibly practical solution for summer clutter. Instead of letting your swimwear get buried in a drawer, this crate provides an organized home for your summer essentials that's worthy of sitting next to your bookshelf.

Whether you want to feature a favorite book quote, stick to a specific bookish color palette, or do what I did and recreate the spines of some of your favorite books, these crates turn functional storage into a beautiful piece of home decor.
  • Practical Organization: It gives your bikinis a dedicated home for the summer, keeping your closet tidy.
  • Creative Therapy: This is a relaxing, hands-on way to unwind during the day without looking at a screen. Grab a couple of books that inspire you, some paints, and a couple paintbrushes and you are on your way to creating something you can use each summer that fits your very own unique bookish aesthetic.
You can find wooden crates for your very own bikini crate at your local craft store, and they usually carry various sizes so you can pick the one that fits your space best. Also, remember that it doesn't have to be perfect! I used acrylic paints for my crate, but I've also seen some people create designs using markers too. The most important part is to have fun and make it your own.

Book Bedazzling
If you love the idea of turning your favorite books into stunning pieces to display on your bookshelf, then you have to try book bedazzling. This hobby is exactly what it sounds like, you add gems and rhinestones to your book covers to give them that extra "wow" factor.
There's something super satisfying about placing each little jewel and seeing your book transform from a standard copy into something that truly sparkles.
  • Customization: Whether you are adding subtle sparkles to the title or going all out with a maximalist design, you get to choose exactly how much bedazzling you want.
  • The Cozy Factor: Like painting, this requires a good amount of focus, making it a great way to unplug from your phone for a few hours.
  • Shelf Appeal: Once you're finished, you end up with a gorgeous book to display on your shelf.
Now, you don't need a huge setup to start book bedazzling. A pack of gems, some adhesive, tweezers, and a book to customize are all you need. The bedazzling set I got off of Amazon had everything I needed besides the book itself (which, as you know, I already had plenty of!) and you can find it here. Much like painting your bikini crate, there's no pressure to be perfect. You can keep it simple with just a few accents or go big and bedazzle the whole cover. Just have fun with it!

Cozy Baking With a Bookish Twist
If you're looking for a hobby that satisfies both your hunger for stories as well as your actual sweet tooth, then look no further than book-inspired baking. There's something so immersive about eating a treat that a character in your book just enjoyed, it's like bringing a tiny piece of the story into your own kitchen. The best part? You have so much freedom here and can easily pick a baking project that matches your current baking skill level.
  • Recipes from the Story: Some books, like To All the Boys I've Loved Before, actually include delicious recipes right in the back of the book as a little built in bonus. I found a white chocolate cranberry cookie recipe from this book that my family loves around the holidays!
  • Explore Bookish Cookbooks: There are so many stunning cookbooks inspired by popular series, such as Bridgerton and The Lord of the Rings. If you're looking for a budget-friendly option, check out your local library to see if they have any in their collection.
  • Get Creative: You don't always need a specific recipe! Simply recreate a treat that a character was eating in your current read, like a perfectly crumbly scone or a warm mug of hot cocoa.
Whether you are a pro in the kitchen or still learning how to preheat the oven, this hobby is all about the experience itself. Don't worry about it being "bakery perfect"; instead, focus on the cozy vibes, the delicious smell filling your home, and enjoy this screen free way of unwinding with your favorite book characters.

Diamond Painting & Audiobooks
If you are looking for a hobby that lets you fully escape for a few hours, then diamond painting is a must-try. You can work in total silence, pair it with your favorite playlist, or my personal favorite: listen to an immersive audiobook. Because this activity keeps your hands busy but your mind free, it's the perfect way to feel productive while still devouring a story.
  • So Many Kits to Choose From: You can find endless options at your local craft store, but I love to browse online for themed ones that match my aesthetic. My personal favorites are my Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride kits that I've picked up on Amazon (also, hello to any fellow Tim Burton fans!).
  • The Slow-Hobby Approach: This hobby is best enjoyed over a period of time rather than trying to finish a whole diamond painting at once. They can be quite time consuming, so treat it as a long-term cozy project that you can pick up whenever you need to unwind.
Whether you are working on a massive, highly detailed painting or a smaller, quicker design, this is such a rewarding way to see a piece of art come together while you also get to lose yourself in your latest audiobook.

Creative Writing
If you are looking for the ultimate way to let your creativity flow, then try creative writing. Whether you decide to start your own book, play around with online writing prompts, or try your hand at poetry and short stories, this is an incredible way to tap into your imaginative side. As readers, we often think writing looks easy, but once you start putting pen to paper yourself, you get to see all the moving parts that go into building a story. It truly makes you appreciate the books on your shelf for what went into them to create the stories you love.
  • Start Wherever You'd Like: You don't have to start a novel right away. Try searching for writing prompts online or in writing work-books to get those creative juices flowing without the pressure of a big project.
  • The Evening Unwind: I personally love to write at the end of a chaotic night to help clear my head. Even if I'm just focusing on writing a single chapter, it's a great ritual that helps me shift from work mode into a more relaxed and imaginative space.
Whether you're writing a full length story or just jotting down a few poems, this hobby is all about the process. It's super rewarding to see the bookish world we love from the other side, and you might just find that it becomes one of your favorite ways to unwind.

Whether you are picking up a paintbrush, a pen, or a whisk, the most important thing is that you're doing something that brings you joy. These hobbies are all about reconnecting with the stories we love and incorporating a little extra cozy into our daily routines. I hope this list inspired you to find your very own new favorite bookish hobby! Which one are you going to try first? Let me know in the comments below!

The 10 Best Kindle Unlimited Romance Recommendations You Need to Read in 2025

A few years ago I had a realization many bookworms face: my "to-be-read" pile had become an entire library of unread books, with little shelf space remaining. As new books kept coming out, my book buying habit was easily outpacing my reading speed. So, I decided to take the leap and buy a Kindle to not only save money, but to also reduce the amount of physical books I was buying. While I've found some great free books and monthly sales, nothing has saved me more money than my Kindle Unlimited subscription. I often see people asking if Kindle Unlimited is worth it, and my answer is always a resounding "yes."The monthly subscription costs less than a single paperback book, but also lets you borrow up to 20 books at a time. I love that I can read a book digitally at first, then if I absolutely love it, I can buy a physical copy for my shelves later. Plus, it's a fantastic way to save a significant amount of money if you tend to read a lot. And you don't eve...

Book Review: Wild Love by Elsie Silver

It's no secret that Elsie Silver is the queen of cowboy romance books. Her Chestnut Springs series made it onto many romance readers favorites list over the last few years, so you can guess my excitement (along with everyone else's) when she announced her spin off Rose Hill series. This series not only begins with a book featuring Ford, who is Willa's brother from Chestnut Springs, but also is marketed as being a series where four single dads find love. That's right ladies. Four books all promised to be single-dad romances, taking place in a cozy little mountain side small town. Did I mention they all are on a bowling team for single dads? Here are my thoughts on the first book in her new series, Wild Love . Get the Book Here Synopsis When Rosie Belmont finds herself suddenly back in her childhood town of Rose Hill, her brother's best friend Ford will do everything in his power from crossing a line with her. Things get more complicated when Rosie needs a job, and...

Book Review: Leave Me Behind by K.M. Moronova

Although I tend to post romance books on the fluffier and sweeter side of the genre, I also am a big fan of dark romances. Sure, rom-coms are fun, but after a while they often reach a point where they all start to blend together. So what better way to break up the monotony than with a dark romance? One of my favorite aspects about this sub-genre is its willingness to tackle difficult topics, often leading to a much more emotional read. Plus, it doesn't hurt that usually the spice level is through the roof!  Leave Me Behind is a book I probably would have never picked up on my own if it hadn't been featured in one of my book subscription boxes. I don't generally gravitate towards military romances, and at the time this had been a newer release, while also being by an author I hadn't read from before. However, this book has since gained a lot of traction, with readers everywhere sharing their thoughts. Here are my own on Leave Me Behind . Get the Book Here Synopsis Leave...
